August 2012 – AleSmith Speedway Stout

If you enjoy good craft beer, here is a tip for you: When you find a bar that likes to bring in a good selection of beer and makes an effort to change it up fairly regularly, become friends with the bartender. It will have benefits.

Such is what happened to me one night last week. A local bar was having a night featuring a DuClaw Brewery, which is not too far from me. Unfortunately, they only had one of their beers that I was interested in trying. After trying that one, I asked the bartender if they had anything good that was not on the menu.

That is when he pulled out this beauty from a hidden cooler. AleSmith Speedway Stout. I had never heard of it, and now having researched more about it, I do not know how I missed this one. He said he had heard really good things about it, but at $21 a bottle nobody at the bar had tried it yet. Well, I was sold.

Speedway Stout is an Imperial Stout that has been called by some one of the best dark beers in the world. Having tried it, I can see why. It is just pure liquid awesomeness. It is 12% ABV, but unlike a lot of high alcohol containing beers, you really did not notice the extra alcohol in the taste or aroma. It goes down really smooth with a great coffee and dark chocolate flavor.

This one has supplanted Old Rasputin’s Imperial Stout as my favorite in this style of beer.
